Reading Success Fueled by Research

Did you know that there is nearly a century of research on the science of unlocking language? At Step By Step Learning, we interpreted this massive body of research through our combined decades of experience to create literacy toolkits that are unrivaled in effectiveness for small group instruction. So what sets us apart?

  • We Provide Small, Easy Steps - Teachers who use our toolkits appreciate our bite-sized approach. As they begin to work through the lessons, both teachers and students benefit from the confidence inspired by positive momentum.

  • Our Lessons Are Direct - Teachers find all the materials they need to facilitate engaging lessons that include ample practice in a guided lesson structure. Students systematically learn to accurately and automatically read words in isolation, while building up to passages of connected text.

  • The Skills Are Targeted - This allows for an efficient and effective lesson to be delivered precisely where the gap is identified.

Each kit contains:
  • scripted 20- to 30-minute lessons
  • sample sessions on DVD
  • appropriate manipulatives
  • word lists
  • five sets of student materials for small group instruction.
KIT 1: PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS - Using the Spoken Word
Literacy is fundamentally tied to spoken language, yet when we began creating our toolkits, there were no materials for teachers or parents supported a language-based approach to literacy education.
English has 44 distinct sounds, called phonemes, which serve as the building blocks for every word in the language. Strong readers are able to segment and blend these phonemes in spoken language. With our Phonological Awareness Toolkit, teachers finally have the materials available to teach this abstract concept to struggling readers in a concrete, multi-sensory way.

KIT 2: BEGINNING DECODING - Building Beginning Readers
Once armed with Phonological Awareness, readers effectively become decoders, decrypting text into the familiar words used in spoken language. That challenge is using only 26 letters to represent 44 sounds, which means using combinations of letters to represent certain sounds.
Our Beginning Decoding Toolkit accomplishes this task in a logical, systematic way. Instead of letter tiles, we supply grapheme tiles, where each tile is marked with the letters corresponding to a particular sound.

KIT 3: ADVANCED DECODING - Deciphering Multisyllabic Words
This toolkit expands upon monosyllabic word decoding by teaching students to break words into smaller syllable types. Readers who can recognize the various parts of words, as well as the spelling principles related to types of syllables, are less challenged to read big words. Once students understand how words are constructed, they are better able to pronounce and decode larger words.

Moreover, this toolkit fosters fluency by presenting the words in connected text. The lessons establish a structured routine, ensuring that words are attacked in a systematic way. Once decoding is established, an emphasis on the meaning can follow in the reader's mind.

"The kit is convenient for the teacher because it provides the lessons and divides the materials according to the phonics continuum."
Crystal Eddy

"I really like the kits. Everything is right at your fingertips. The scripted lessons are great, especially for teachers and paraprofessionals that haven't had much reading training. Also, the lessons are systematic, explicit, and follow the phonological and phonics continuums."
